On September 10, 2024, the orientation programme for the 2024-26 Batch of NSS Training College Ottapalam’s unit no. 301 was held in the General Hall. Dr. Santosh P P, Assistant Professor Department of Zoology Sreekrishna College Guruvayur, served as the programme’s resource person. The programme began at 2 p.m. with NSS geetham which was sung by Sreedurga,Niveditha and Sreeshna. Prof (Dr.) Smitha R., the Principal in charge, made the welcome address. She emphasized the significance of social duty throughout her remarks. Prof (Dr.) Sunil Kumar A S, the NSS Programme Officer, presented the congratulatory address. Orientation was quite participatory, with games. Dr Santhosh PP’s class began with a game that helped to grab the students’ attention and increase their focus.

The first half of the program focused on the significance of readiness. He requested for a volunteer to assist him in carrying out the session. Aparna, a first-year B.Ed English student, was the willing participant. She was rewarded with a chocolate by the resource person. Then he discussed how crucial the quality of readiness is for an NSS volunteer since he or she must be ready to serve 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He complimented Aparna on her confidence and encouraged other pupils to be confident in themselves. To show the need of confidence, he told the story of two birds: one trusts the branch, the other trusts its wings. There was also some familiarity with NSS clap. The history of NSS involved being acquainted with the logo and its significance, demonstrating how it embodies the service mindset of NSS volunteers through the eight spokes of the Conark Sun Temple. He further noted that the objective of NSS is not just to provide social services, but also to teach students about the dignity of labor.

He advised volunteers to complete the tasks allocated to them perfectly, regardless of their family or social background. Volunteering requires active involvement in the community. The value of group dynamics was illustrated through a game.

The second part of volunteering was responsibility. It encompasses responsibility for oneself, one’s family, and society. He also emphasized the necessity of leadership qualities. For this, he put students into three groups, each with a leader. One leader was supposed to just give orders calmly, the second to behave democratically, and the third to act autocratically. By the end of the game, the desirable traits that a leader must possess were perfectly exhibited.

The programme ended at 4 pm with thanks expressed by all volunteers who were present through a clapping exercise. Feedback of the programme was given by Ashok K T of Social Science optional. The meeting was dispersed by taking a group photograph.
